Ravens Coach Makes Telling Admission About Offense Without Lamar Jackson

With Lamar Jackson’s status for Week 5 in question, Jesse Minter explains what the Ravens offense would look like without him.

One of the bigger surprises out of Week 4 of the NFL season was the injury to Lamar Jackson. On the final play of the first half, Jackson was sacked behind the line of scrimmage, and a Titans defender landed on his left ankle. He limped off the field and didn’t play the entire second half, leaving Tyler Huntley to finish the game.

The Baltimore Ravens still rolled to a 24-18 victory, but Jackson’s status for Week 5 against the Falcons is now in question. Head coach Jesse Minter said Jackson is considered “day-to-day” with an ankle sprain, but recent reports have indicated he could miss multiple games. If that happens, Minter doesn’t believe the offense will change much under Huntley.

"I think the system of our offense and what we do does not have to change a whole lot," Minter said Wednesday. "A lot of the plays, especially whether it’s when we are under center and running a lot of those types of things, [Huntley] can do all that. He can make a lot of those same plays.

"Obviously, Lamar’s magic is what it is. He is the best quarterback in the league for a reason. But we have a lot of confidence in ‘Snoop’ [Huntley], if that is the way it goes, to be able to really run our offense, to get the ball to our playmakers, move those guys around, find ways to get them the ball, find ways to create angles and space in the run game, and I think our offense has proven that we will be able to do that. [I’m] excited about that if that is the way it goes for him to go out there and play really well." He has since evolved into one of the most valuable backups in the league, and he has already taken over for Jackson multiple times. He's appeared in 31 games overall and made 16 starts, including a brief stint in Miami during the 2024 season. For his career, he has completed 66.6% of his passes for 3,275 yards and 13 touchdowns with 10 interceptions, along with 811 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.

He is also 5-6 as a starter with the Ravens and earned Pro Bowl honors in 2022 after leading Baltimore to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth when Jackson went down with a knee injury. Huntley has a similar dual-threat skill set to Jackson, which makes it easier for offensive coordinators to scheme plays and makes the drop-off less noticeable. Of course, he’s still not Jackson, a two-time league MVP and one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
