Sony’s franchise reboot “Resident Evil” stormed to the summit of the U.K. and Ireland box office, debuting in first place with £4.2 million ($5.6 million) across its opening frame. Warner Bros.’ “Practical Magic 2” moved to second place in its sophomore weekend, generating $2.03 million to bring its running total to $7.5 million. Studiocanal claimed third position with the debut of Aardman’s animated adventure “Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom,” which banked $2.2 million in its opening session.
Studiocanal’s thriller “Pressure” took fourth spot in its second week with $1.4 million, pushing its cume to $5.8 million. Universal’s epic “The Odyssey,” directed by Christopher Nolan, followed in fifth place during its 10th frame, adding $794,765 to elevate its running total to $116.1 million. Sony Pictures’ superhero blockbuster “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” placed sixth in its eighth week of release, collecting $772,975.
The Marvel tentpole crossed another historic milestone to reach a running local total of $133.9 million, to occupy third position on the all-time U.K. and Ireland box office chart, sitting just behind “Skyfall.” Disney’s documentary “Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger” took seventh place in its second frame with $659,899, lifting its cume to $5.1 million. Paramount’s “Bad Apples” bowed in eighth position with an opening weekend of $658,468. Trafalgar Releasing captured ninth place with the rollout of “Transformers: 40th Anniversary Event,” taking $585,683.
In specialized release, Mubi’s “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” lifted its running cumulative total to $1.3 million. Mubi also launched Garth Jennings’ documentary “Pulp: What Do You Do for an Encore?” with a special one-night-only live broadcast Q&A featuring frontman Jarvis Cocker and Jennings hosted from Picturehouse Central. The Friday event generated $98,392 from 51 locations, with weekend encore screenings lifting the title’s overall haul to $150,455.
Looking ahead to the upcoming theatrical frame, mid-week programming begins with National Theatre Live presenting “The Misanthrope,” followed by Paramount launching David Ayer’s action thriller “Heart of the Beast,” starring Brad Pitt and J.K. Simmons, across 300+ locations. A heavy slate of new titles and restorations arrives on Friday.
Wide and saturation rollouts across 300+ locations include Universal’s “Sense and Sensibility.” Neon is opening Na Hong-Jin’s thriller “Hope,” starring Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon, Taylor Russell, Alicia Vikander, and Michael Fassbender, across 100+ locations. Specialized and limited debuts opening across 25+ screens include Mubi’s release of Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Her Private Hell,” starring Sophie Thatcher and Charles Melton; BUFF Studios’ “Shadows of Beirut”; and Dartmouth Films’ nature documentary “North Sea, Nature Untamed,” directed by Mark Verkerk. Additional specialized and platform offerings include Sony’s “Rehearsals for a Revolution”, MetFilm Distribution’s release of Ross McElwee’s “Remake,’ Blue Finch Film Releasing’s “Boorman and the Devil”, and Metis Films’ “Babystar”.
