Rob Gronkowski thinks an unassuming star is on track to win his first career MVP award. The former star tight end labeled Brock Purdy the early MVP front-runner on Wednesday's "Up & Adams." Gronkowski believes the San Francisco 49ers quarterback currently has a better case than two recent winners. "Brock Purdy should be the favorite," Gronkowski said Wednesday.
"Brock Purdy should be number one, and then it should be Lamar Jackson, and then it should be Josh Allen after that last game." Gronkowski recalled a preseason conversation with former New England Patriots teammate Julian Edelman about Purdy's intelligence in the passing pocket. "Who are quarterbacks that just sit in the pocket and just process defenses, and that's how they react and that's who they go to -- whatever wide receiver is open because of what the defense is giving them? And Brock Purdy was our number one guy," Gronkowski said.
I think Brock Purdy might be the number one quarterback in the NFL that can scan a defense, process a defense, read the coverage, go to the guy that's open, and get the job done using his brain-processing powers of knowing the game of football and knowing what the defense is gonna do." It's not far-fetched to see 2022's "Mr. Irrelevant" continue his triumphant NFL story with MVP hardware. Purdy has guided the 49ers to a dominant 4-0 start with an NFL-best 89.7 QBR.
He's completed 69.9% of his passes for 1,007 yards, 11 touchdowns, and one interception, averaging 8.9 yards per attempt. Allen remains the betting favorite on FanDuel Sportsbook, but Jackson could fall out of the running if he's forced to miss time with an ankle injury. Patrick Mahomes could also vie for his third MVP, and Trevor Lawrence and Dak Prescott are lingering as possible dark horses amid strong starts to the 2026 season.
Purdy can bolster his MVP case with a strong showing in Sunday's monumental NFC West matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
