Robert Griffin III Fires Stern Bryce Underwood Warning to Michigan Coaches

Robert Griffin III warns Michigan coaches about how to best utilize the skillset of starting quarterback Bryce Underwood.

After back-to-back losses for the University of Michigan, pressure has begun to mount for the Michigan coaching staff to potentially move away from quarterback Bryce Underwood. However, former Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III seems to believe Underwood's issues may be more related to how coaches are utilizing Underwood's skillset. Underwood's worst game of the season came in the team's Week 5 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers, throwing for just 101 yards and committing multiple costly turnovers in the team's 20-14 loss.

Given Underwood came to Michigan as the consensus No. 1 recruit in the 2025 high school recruiting class and is being paid heftily by the Wolverines to be at the program, the results simply have not been good enough. However, Robert Griffin seems to believe that some of Underwood's struggles come from Michigan deploying Underwood as a run-first quarterback.

"Benching Bryce Underwood would be Michigan's biggest mistake," said Griffin in a video posted on his X account. "If Michigan wants to throw away their season, I have the perfect plan. Apparently, the solution for failing your quarterback is benching your quarterback for being failed.

I am not defending bad quarterback play. Bryce Underwood has not played great this season. I'm asking why is the quarterback playing so badly?

"Michigan reportedly committed around $12 million over four years in NIL money to secure Bryce Underwood. You didn't make that investment because Bryce Underwood is a failed product. You made it because of his ability and where you thought it could go.

Arm talent, vertical passing ability, the ability to attack the entire field with his arm first, and then his legs second. And then Michigan decided to hire Kyle Whittingham, who is a tremendous football coach. I am not taking that away from him.
