When he reached an agreement to sell the Los Angeles Angels to Kroenke Sports & Entertainment on Tuesday, Arte Moreno stood to make at least $4 billion. On Wednesday, Forbes’ Barry Bloom reported the team was valued at $4.5 billion — a record for an MLB franchise. No one is questioning the wisdom of a decision to sell an asset that Moreno paid $183.5 million to acquire in 2003.
As for his acumen running a team that has not reached the postseason since 2014 — the longest active drought of any franchise — Moreno has been heavily scrutinized by Angels fans for a decade. News of the pending sale brought a sigh of relief for fans who have been chanting "sell the team," and carrying signs exhorting Moreno to do the same. Ironically, agent Scott Boras might have summarized the problem better than anyone in the 24 hours since the Angels' impending sale was announced.

I think after a while, the complexities of it, all of it certainly changed,” Boras told the New York Daily News. Rather than investing a fraction of Rendon's $245 million contract in player development — minor league coaches, technology, and front-office personnel to modernize the Angels' infrastructure — he gave it to a player who spent most of the last six seasons on the injured list.
