Seahawks End up Not Signing RB Joe Mixon for One Reason

The Seahawks were planning to sign veteran running back Joe Mixon on Monday, but that changed less than 24 hours later.

On Monday, ESPN's Mike Garafolo reported that the Seattle Seahawks were signing veteran running back Joe Mixon to the squad after he completed a workout with the team. Less than 24 hours later, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the team didn't sign the running back because of the results of his physical. It's unknown what specifically showed up as a red flag for the Seahawks to not want to sign Mixon to the practice squad anymore, but it's worth noting that Mixon missed the entire 2025 season because of a foot injury.

The Houston Texans released him this past offseason. Texans general manager Nick Caserio told reporters in January that Mixon's "freak" foot injury "was more of a medical condition or situation that never ... really didn't improve maybe as much as everybody would have hoped," via ESPN. It's possible Mixon's foot injury didn't improve as much as he wanted to by the time he underwent his physical with Seattle.

Mixon will remain a free agent and continue looking to be signed to other NFL teams, although his chances may have decreased because of his seemingly failed physical. It didn't seem like Mixon was going to be a good fit in Seattle, though. For instance, Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald didn't seem give much emotion when asked about Mixon's expected signing on Monday.

He's a good running back," Macdonald said when asked why the team looked into signing Mixon. The Seahawks will likely shift their focus to finding another running back to sign. It seems to be a priority for them, especially since losing the reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Walker is crushing it with the Chiefs and even has made history with the team. Seattle's running back core is doing mediocre at best so far this season. Emanuel Wilson is leading the team with just 190 rushing yards through four games, a total Walker nearly hit in one single game with the Chiefs.

Wilson's the only running back on the team to score a rushing touchdown so far this season. The biggest issue, though, is rookie RB Jadarian Price being placed on the injured reserve list on Saturday with a chest injury. He'll miss at least the next three contests, which is the main reason the Seahawks were searching for another solid backup option.
