Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold is on track to return for Sunday's game vs. the Washington Commanders. The Seahawks officially took Darnold off the injury report on Friday, setting him up for starting on Sunday. Coach Mike Macdonald said the quarterback looked "really good" in practice this week.
"He’s done a great job." The Super Bowl LX champion left the season opener on the fifth play of the game due to a glute injury he suffered. He was taken to a local trauma center during the game on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Luckily Darnold learned during that hospital visit that his injury wasn't season-ending.
Sunday afternoon's start will give Darnold a proper opportunity to show fans that he can still lead the Super Bowl-winning Seahawks. It's no secret that Darnold wasn't the star of the team last season, but if he can consistently help the Seahawks secure wins this season to possibly be repeat champions, then his reception will likely be more enthusiastic. The 2-0 Seahawks have been in good hands while Darnold recovered.
It was definitely anxiety-inducing for Seahawks fans when Darnold went down knowing that Drew Lock was his replacement. Lock hasn't had the most success in his NFL career, to say the least. He infamously led the Denver Broncos to a 4-9 record as the starter in 2020.
But, Lock has quickly proven the doubters wrong during his two early appearances for the Seahawks. In two games, Lock completed 35-of-48 passes for 422 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions. It's good to know the Seahawks have a reliable backup quarterback for if and when Darnold is out—something that was questionable in the past.
On the other side of the field, the Commanders will be without their starting quarterback Jayden Daniels after he dislocated his left elbow last weekend. Washington isn't planning to place Daniels on the injured reserve list, and surgery isn't one of the expected outcomes. He will miss at least one contest, if not more.
