The Cleveland Browns decided not to make any cuts at the quarterback position when they trimmed the roster to 53 players on Sunday. The Browns are set to start Deshaun Watson in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. With Watson set to earn first-team reps in practice, Shedeur Sanders and rookie quarterback Taylen Green are set to split reps on the scout team (Dillon Gabriel is on injured reserve for a back injury he suffered in Thursday night's preseason game against the New England Patriots).
Sports analyst Skip Bayless made strong comments about the Browns' plans at quarterback via a post on X. He suggested Browns head coach Todd Monken "does not value" Sanders and is essentially "imprisoned" in Cleveland. "Shedeur is like imprisoned in Cleveland. I wanted them to at the very least, just cut him. He's going to have to find a new home somewhere where somebody really likes him, where somebody says, 'I want him.
I was afraid to say it when he was coming out but I actually like him.' "There's somebody out there who actually likes him. I believe it with all my heart and soul." Bayless thinks it's unfair the way Monken has characterized the quarterback battle, insinuating the head coach has taken shots at Sanders when he praised Gabriel for being able to operate his offense and gets what the Browns want to do. Bayless thinks the Browns never gave Sanders a chance to become the starter, deciding to draft him for publicity and jersey sales.
"It's just so wrong," Bayless said. "It's just so nauseating for me. It's so absolutely wrong that it rips my guts out to watch the league continue to do this to Shedeur Sanders." There is a chance Sanders will have the opportunity to change the narrative at some point this season.
