Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. had his injury designation changed on Wednesday. It's not as good as it sounds, though... Porter's back injury is no longer an issue, though was still listed a limited participant at practice due to his lack of conditioning.
The Steelers have slowly ramped up his activity over the last several weeks, though there are a few more factors at play than just that back injury. Porter has been embroiled in a contract dispute with the club since the early days of the offseason and was unable to come to an agreement with the club prior to Sunday's season-opening matchup with the Atlanta Falcons. Pittsburgh is said to be listening to offers on the fourth-year cornerback, with an early-season deal possible, per ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The Steelers have yet to have someone reach their asking price of a premium pick, per the report, which means it might behoove the club to wait until teams thin at the position become slightly more desperate. Porter certainly isn't going to receive the same kind of money as the New England Patriots' Christian Gonzalez, Cleveland Browns' Denzel Ward, Los Angeles Rams' Trent McDuffie, and Seattle Seahawks' Devon Witherspoon -- all of whom received big-money extensions this offseason that will pay them more than $30 million per season -- which might slow down conversations regarding an extension or trade. If things stay they way they've been over the last several weeks, maybe he just plays out the string.
