Far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos was taken into Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody on Friday, according to agency records reviewed by Newsweek, renewing attention on his years-long ties to both President Donald Trump's political movement and rapper Kanye West's political and business ventures. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the reason for his detention as of Friday afternoon. Newsweek has reached out to ICE and the Department of Homeland Security via email on Friday afternoon for comment.
Yiannopoulos first became nationally known during Trump's 2016 presidential campaign as a Breitbart editor and one of the most prominent figures associated with the emerging "alt-right" movement. Although he fell from grace in conservative circles following a 2017 controversy over remarks about relationships between adults and teenage boys, he remained a recognizable figure in Trump-world politics and among some MAGA activists for years afterward. His most significant role in recent years came through his association with West, now known as Ye.
In 2022, Yiannopoulos became involved in the rapper's political orbit as West explored another presidential run and generated controversy with a string of antisemitic remarks and other inflammatory statements. He later served as director of political operations for West's YE24 presidential campaign and remained a key adviser as the rapper expanded his political and business activities. The British-born commentator was detained in Louisiana while in New Orleans ahead of a scheduled Kanye West concert, according to CBS News.
