Donald Trump has accused The New York Times of editing a picture of the Trump National Doral in Miami in a scathing Truth Social post where he dubbed the outlet “totally dishonest.” In two posts on Monday, the president shared a picture published in an article by The New York Times on Sunday. Taken by photographer Scott McIntyre, the exterior picture of the Trump National Doral Miami appears to show the building with a dull exterior color and obvious dirty walls. He shared a second picture, the exterior of the Trump National Doral with bright white walls, completely clean.
Newsweek reached out to The New York Times and photographer Scott McIntyre via email for comment. Trump National Doral has become increasingly central to scrutiny over the intersection of Trump's presidency and private business interests, particularly after the White House announced plans for December's G20 summit to be hosted at the property. The image was at the heart of an article in the Times that examined how Trump’s return to office has come with an increased merging of the presidential and personal.
During his first term, when Trump hosted the annual G7 summit leaders at the Trump National Doral, there was uproar. Now seven years later, the article argued that Trump’s decision to host the G20 annual summit world leaders there in December has barely been noticed. It is not clear when the image by McIntyre was taken, and available metadata did not confirm or deny any editing.
Trump did not provide evidence that the image had been digitally altered beyond juxtaposing it with a brighter photograph that he said reflected the property's actual appearance. Multiple archival photographs of the property reviewed by Newsweek, including photos from 2023 and 2026, appear to show discoloration or weathering on portions of the same facade visible in the Times image. A similar picture taken in October 2023 by Images’ Cliff Hawkins appears to show some of the same darkened dirt on the building.
Similarly, a close-up from a picture taken in May by photographer Carmen Mandato appears to show some of the same darkened dirt on the facade of the building. Trump has attacked the Times for years, frequently accusing it of biased or false reporting. The newspaper has published extensive investigations into Trump's finances, taxes, business record and presidency.
The relationship has become especially adversarial during his latest presidential term, particularly after Trump filed a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against the Times, its reporters, and Penguin Random House over defamation tied to coverage published during the 2024 presidential campaign. While Newsweek could not confirm if the image had been edited or not, President Trump seemed certain. On Truth Social he said: “The Times is a CROOKED outfit that caters to Lunatics who want to see our country fail,” before adding that “These people are STONE COLD LOSERS...
