Neither has publicly confirmed any demolition plans, but the images add a new dimension to an already contentious battle over the institution's future. Trump seized control of the Kennedy Center's leadership after returning to office in 2025, replacing board members with allies and eventually becoming chairman.
The shake-up prompted a backlash from prominent artists including Issa Rae, Shonda Rhimes, Ben Folds and Renée Fleming, who cut ties with the institution amid concerns it was becoming increasingly politicized. Later that year, the Trump-appointed board voted to add Trump's name to the building, dubbing it "The Donald J. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts," and also triggering a lawsuit from Representative Joyce Beatty who argued that Congress designated the venue as a memorial to JFK and only Congress can change its name.
In May 2026, a federal judge ruled the move unlawful, agreeing that only Congress could alter the name of the memorial to President John F. Since then, Kennedy Center leaders have pursued alternative ways to recognize Trump through plaques, inscriptions and naming proposals tied to fundraising and planned renovations, while simultaneously warning that the building faces serious structural and financial challenges. Meanwhile, financial and structural problems have become part of the fight.
Trump allies argued the center is in poor condition, faces huge maintenance costs and could be heading toward financial collapse. They said major renovations are needed and that Trump could help raise money for them. After part of a ceiling fell inside the building in early September, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trump pointed to the incident as evidence that the center is unsafe and needs extensive reconstruction.
On September 15, District Judge Christopher R. Cooper issued an order over efforts to add Trump’s name to the building. "The drama at the Kennedy Center continues," he said.
"Simply put, Defendants cannot install memorials for President Trump or anyone or anything else at the Kennedy Center without Congress’s blessing." Following this, Trump announced that the Kennedy Center would close immediately following a board vote to close the venue for two years. The president wrote on his Truth Social platform that the board voted "almost unanimously" to close the venue "for safety reasons.” But he added that renovations will not begin until the court approves the board’s new naming suggestion. "The closing will take place immediately, however, the Renovation and Reconstruction, which is a very large and complex job, cannot begin until such time as the D.C.
