President Donald Trump is vowing to hit the campaign trail for Republicans as the party faces a competitive battle to maintain control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections. Meanwhile, billionaire Elon Musk’s super PAC, America PAC, has begun spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in key House and Senate races. Speaking at a White House Rose Garden dinner with Republican lawmakers Wednesday, Trump said he plans to campaign in roughly 35 races, focusing on contests he believes will determine whether the GOP retains its majorities.
Trump told Republicans that he intends to make numerous stops during the final stretch of the campaign, with his efforts expected to center on competitive House and Senate contests. The president has already campaigned for GOP candidates in states including Texas and South Carolina and is expected to make additional appearances, including to Alaska to campaign for Senator Dan Sullivan, he said. "It's all about 35 races," Trump said.
"I'm going to go to every one of those 35 places and we're going to see if we can get everyone elected." "We're going to really work hard. We're going to take that final 30 days... get all those people elected... I'm going to have to work," Trump also said in part.
Newsweek reached out to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) via email on Wednesday night for comment. The push comes as several Senate races have become increasingly competitive. The Cook Political Report currently rates six Senate contests as Toss Ups: Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Ohio and Texas.
Five of those seats are held by Republicans, while Michigan is an open Democratic-held seat, giving Democrats several opportunities to make gains. Cook also recently moved the Iowa and Texas Senate races from Lean Republican to Toss Up, citing increasingly competitive polling. At the same time, Musk's America PAC is beginning to put money behind Republican candidates in key races.
The PAC has disclosed roughly $800,000 in independent expenditures across a series of battleground Senate and House contests, marking its first reported independent spending of the 2026 cycle, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) campaign finance filings reported by CNN's Patrick Svitek on X. Musk has already emerged as a major Republican donor this cycle, with America PAC reporting roughly $50 million in receipts through the latest available filings. In the independent expenditure filing, America PAC has spent six figures for Republican Ken Paxton's campaign in Texas, the Alaska Senate race, and the Iowa Senate race.
