The Golden State Warriors are heading into camp hoping to leave last season behind. Media Day was supposed to be about fresh faces, new coaches and a healthy start. Instead, it turned into another injury conversation.
The Warriors already knew Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody would miss opening night. That put extra weight on the big man in the middle. ESPN's Anthony Slater shared the update on X writing: "Kristaps Porzingis is out indefinitely to open training camp with a health issue, per Warriors.
Another immediate blow to their depth." Slater followed up with a quote from general manager Mike Dunleavy, who tried to calm things down. "I'm not marking him down as being out to start the season or anything like that. He's just not available this week,” Dunleavy said.
Dunleavy also said Porzingis practiced last week and was fully cleared. He learned of the health issue only on Sunday. Porzingis will not travel to Hawaii, and no return date is set.
The timing still stings for a player who spent his summer rebuilding trust. Porzingis said the unexplained illness that cost him 16 games after last February's trade was behind him. He even skipped Latvia's FIBA windows to focus on recovery.
The team has not said whether this new issue is related. Porzingis played only 15 games after the trade, averaging 16.1 points and 5.3 rebounds. Golden State still gave him a two-year, $40 million deal in June.
