Trump's 250-foot arch will be taller than famous monuments in Paris, London, Rome and New Delhi.

President Donald Trump's United States Triumphal Arch will stand higher than some of the world's most famous arches, including Paris's Arc de Triomphe, London's Wellington Arch, and Rome's Arch of Constantine. At 250 feet tall, the planned monument will be about 54 percent taller than the Arc de Triomphe, long regarded as one of the world's defining triumphal arches. The proposal is one of the administration's most ambitious architectural projects and work is set to start in a matter of weeks.

Trump first unveiled plans for what was initially called the "Independence Arch" in October 2025 before the project evolved into what is now commonly known as the United States Triumphal Arch. The monument is designed as a monumental gateway celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence. Current renderings show a granite-clad triumphal arch topped by gilded statuary and an observation deck.

Renderings also showed a towering, white arch with gold detail, stamped with “ONE NATION UNDER GOD." On its top is a Lady Liberty-like gold figure with wings and a torch, as well as gold eagles, their wings spread outward. According to project plans, the structure would rise 250 feet above the surrounding landscape, making it taller than famous arches in Paris, London, Rome, Madrid and New Delhi. Among the international monuments it would surpass are the 162.5-foot Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the 138-foot India Gate in New Delhi and the 92-foot Wellington Arch in London.

If completed as proposed, the United States Triumphal Arch would dwarf many of the world's best-known arches, something Doug Burgum, secretary of the interior, was keen to point out this week. In his X post, he wrote: “Over 70 major cities/capitals around the world, from London, Paris and Rome to Madrid, Athens and New Delhi, all showcase beautiful arches. Interestingly, Washington, DC, is the only major Western capital without an arch.

Now after 125 years of waiting, the most powerful capital in the world will be home of the most spectacular and beautiful arch of them all!” Paris's Arc de Triomphe, commissioned by Napoleon in 1806, stands 162.5 feet tall. London's Wellington Arch reaches 92 feet, while Rome's Arch of Constantine rises 69 feet above the surrounding streetscape. India's India Gate, the second-tallest structure in this comparison, stands 138 feet high.

That would leave the Washington proposal standing nearly 88 feet taller than the Arc de Triomphe and more than twice the height of several historic European arches. Burgum said this week that excavation work for the project is expected to begin in the coming weeks as the administration moves forward with preparations for construction. Burgum described the monument as one of the nation's future great works of architecture and said it would help mark the country's semiquincentennial celebrations.
