Over the weekend at least three fans were asked by WNBA security personnel to cover their shirts that had messages about transgender women participating in women's sports. The incident occurred at Sunday's game between the Atlanta Dream and Indiana Fever. It comes after Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was vocal about keeping transgender athletes out of women's sports in an effort to “protect young girls in the locker room” suggesting that “they shouldn’t have to go against biological men." After taking some time to investigate the incident, the WNBA issued a statement making it clear the fans should have been allowed to wear their shirts.

"This should not have happened." According to ESPN, two people wore shirts with a message that women's and girls' sports should be restricted to those assigned female at birth, while one person was wearing a shirt in support of transgender people. The Dream said the team was not involved in the security personnel's actions.
"The Atlanta Dream believes in creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. Unfortunately, at last night's game, WNBA security took actions that fell short of that standard," the Dream said in a statement. "At no point was Dream personnel involved in the decisions made by WNBA security." Fever games have been hotbeds for discourse of transgender athletes in sports following Cunningham's comments.
