Alexia Putellas scored her first WSL goal as London City Lionesses moved second in the table after beating Brighton 2-0 at home. The two-time Ballon d’Or winner, who left Barcelona in the summer, put London City ahead in the 29th minute when she slotted a low shot into the far corner. Brighton were close to an equaliser before the break when Emily Murphy’s header struck the crossbar.
The hosts then made sure of the points in stoppage time as Lucía Corrales converted a cross from Delphine Cascarino. Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the league season with a 1-0 win at Charlton. Alex Greenwood scored a fine free-kick in the 36th minute, which proved enough to give the defending champions a fourth successive WSL victory.
City had plenty of opportunities to extend their lead but could not find a second goal as promoted Charlton’s winless run continued, leaving them bottom of the table without a point.
