Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield dislocated his right thumb while scrambling on 4th down late in Sunday's Week 3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Quarterback Jalon Daniels, an undrafted rookie out of Kansas, finished the game in place of Mayfield. "He's going to get an MRI [Monday] just to see exactly what inside is wrong with it, so we'll know tomorrow," head coach Todd Bowles said after the game on Sunday.
Mayfield's MRI results on Monday showed no fractures or ligament damage, according to a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport. He's still expected to miss time, but this update is encouraging as it pertains to the length of his recovery process. "Bucs QB Baker Mayfield suffered a dislocated thumb but got good news on the MRI.
No fracture and no ligament or tendon damage," Rapoport reported. "Baker Mayfield is still expected to miss some time, as he'll need to be able to grip a ball. Jalon Daniels will start going forward, but Mayfield's good news helps him back on the field sooner." Daniels, who beat out veteran QB Jake Browning in the preseason, will likely get his first career start for the Buccaneers against the Green Bay Packers this coming Sunday.
Tampa Bay is 0-3 to start the 2026 NFL season, notching losses to Cincinnati, Cleveland and Minnesota.
