The Dallas Cowboys have been hit with some rough injury news before their season opener against the New York Giants. According to the Dallas News' Calvin Watkins, Cowboys running back Malik Davis had hip surgery on Sunday and will be out for the entirety of the 2026 season. This is brutal news for Davis, as the 27-year-old's season is over before it had the chance to begin.
As for the Cowboys, they have lost one of their running back depth options, which is not ideal. With Davis being ruled out for the season, it would not be surprising if the Cowboys looked to bring in another running back during the early stages of the campaign. Davis played in 10 games last season for the Cowboys, where he set career highs with two touchdowns, 11 first-down rushes, 52 rushing attempts, and 250 rushing yards.
Overall, the Tampa, Florida native was serviceable when used by the Cowboys last season, so it is unfortunate he will not get the chance to build on it in 2026. In 25 career NFL games over three seasons with the Cowboys, Davis has recorded three touchdowns to go along with 411 rushing yards. He signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent back in 2022.
