The Dallas Cowboys wrapped up their preseason with a 27-24 win over the New Orleans Saints on Friday, and just days later, released a veteran receiver who played in that game. Marquez Valdes-Scantling had two receptions out of three targets and finished the game with 31 receiving yards. On Sunday, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that he was released by the team.
He's a two-time Super Bowl champion, having previously starred on the Kansas City Chiefs as part of Patrick Mahomes receiving corps. He entered the league in 2018 with the Green Bay Packers and played four seasons there, catching passes from all-time great Aaron Rodgers. The 31-year-old had signed a one-year contract to play for the Cowboys back in April, with Dallas the eighth team he was on during his career.
However, now he'll seemingly be watching as the regular season begins. However, he played in just five games and started in only one.
Valdes-Scantling finished his time in Pittsburgh with 10 receptions for 80 yards and one touchdown. The recent cut by the Cowboys happened ahead of the NFL's deadline for teams to finalize their 53-man rosters. While having a veteran like Valdes-Scantling might be nice, he didn't do enough to earn one of the spots, finishing the preseason with just three receptions and 45 yards in his appearances.
Dallas already has one of the best receiving corps in the league, including talented stars like George Pickens, CeeDee Lamb, and Jake Ferguson. All three were among the favorite targets for quarterback Dak Prescott last season for a Dallas team that was second in total offensive yards per game. With Valdes-Scantling no longer on the roster, one has to wonder what the future might hold for this two-time champion, who had been struggling in recent seasons.
