Los Angeles Dodgers star closer Edwin Diaz is currently on a rehab assignment, and it has not been going well for the 32-year-old. In his most recent appearance for Triple-A Oklahoma City, Diaz allowed five earned runs on two hits and walked three batters in just 0.2 innings pitched. The 2012 third-round pick is clearly still trying to shake off the rust, and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has sent him a clear message.
While speaking with MLB.com's Sonja Chen, Roberts was honest that Diaz has not been pitching well during his rehab assignment. "He needs to pitch better," Roberts said about Diaz. "It hasn't been good." It is hard to disagree with Roberts take here, as Diaz has undoubtedly struggled during his rehab assignment.
His last appearance is certainly concerning, and he is going to need to bounce back from it if he hopes to return to Los Angeles' roster before the playoffs. Diaz's first season with the Dodgers in 2026 has been bad in general. In 16 appearances with Los Angeles this campaign, he has a 2-2 record, an 11.85 ERA, and 19 strikeouts.
This is after the three-time MLB All-Star had a 6-3 record, a 1.63 ERA, and 98 strikeouts in 62 games during the 2025 season with the New York Mets.
