The San Francisco Giants are bringing in a new young pitcher. The Giants have announced that they have claimed left-handed pitcher Philip Abner off of waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. They also shared that they have assigned Abner to Triple-A Sacramento.
The Giants claiming Abner off waivers comes after he was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks earlier this week. Now, the 6-foot-1 lefty will be looking to impress and earn a call-up to the Giants' roster before the season is over. Abner appeared in eight games for the Diamondbacks this season before being designated for assignment, where he had a 0-0 record, six strikeouts, and a 6.28 ERA.
This was after the 24-year-old lefty posted a 0-0 record, five strikeouts, and a 4.91 ERA in his first five career MLB games during the 2025 season. Abner has spent the bulk of this season in Triple-A, though. In 30 games with Triple-A Reno this season before being claimed by the Giants, he posted a 2-1 record, 35 strikeouts, and a 5.01 ERA.
Overall, there is no real harm in the Giants taking a chance on a young pitcher like Abner with this waiver claim. It will be interesting to see if he will get a chance to pitch for San Francisco before the season is over.
