The San Francisco Giants claimed right-handed reliever Camilo Doval off of waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. Doval, who the Giants traded to the New York Yankees at last year's trade deadline in exchange for prospects Jesús Rodríguez, Parks Harber, Trystan Vierling and Carlos De La Rosa, played the first four and a half season of his MLB career with San Francisco. The right-hander was a great arm for the Giants over the course of 275 games with the team, posting a 3.29 ERA and logging 107 saves during his time with the ball club.
He led the National League in saves in 2023 with 39, earning his sole All-Star appearance in the process. The Giants took advantage of a lucrative offer from the Yankees at the 2025 deadline and shipped Doval to the East Coast, but he didn't perform quite as well in the Bronx. He made 22 appearances for the Yankees last season, posting a 4.82 ERA over the course of 18.2 innings pitched.
He had similar numbers in 2026, posting a 4.54 ERA over the course of 39.2 innings pitched. The Yankees unloaded Doval at the deadline, sending him to Pittsburgh for the second half of the season. He performed slightly better as a Pirate, posting a 3.79 ERA over the course of 19 innings, but he struggled to keep runners off the bases—walking 14 batters and allowing 19 hits during that stretch.
Doval has one year of team control remaining, and whether or not he stays with the Giants is entirely up to the team. The Giants, if they feel their bullpen is good enough without Doval, could non-tender the 28-year-old this offseason, making him a free agent in the offseason. Their bullpen sits towards the middle of the pack this season, posting a collective 4.18 ERA on the year for 19th in MLB, so if they see something in Doval they could very well keep him around for his final year of team control.
That may depend on the remainder of the year, though, as the Giants could very well give him a trial appearance during one of their final three games of the season, which will come against the Los Angeles Dodgers from Friday to Sunday.
