Odell Beckham Jr. made headlines this offseason with his return from a one-season hiatus to play for the New York Giants, but thus far, not much has been seen from the three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver. It was a reunion for OBJ with not only the Giants, but also his former head coach John Harbaugh, whom he played for when with the Baltimore Ravens. Beckham Jr., now 33 and in his 11th NFL season, has zero stats to speak of through two games for the 2026 Giants.
That made some wonder why the Giants even added him to the roster if he's not going to get a chance to perform on the football field. According to offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy, the team actually has a plan when it comes to OBJ's involvement in the offense. There’s times when, whatever it is personnel wise, we have it in the game plan and we just didn’t get to it. You’ve got to be ready, one injury away from being in all the time. He knows that, he understands that," the Giants' OC told reporters on Thursday.
Before making his return to the Giants for this season, Beckham Jr. last played in nine games for the Miami Dolphins in 2024. He didn't start in any of those games, but finished his season with only nine receptions for 55 yards and zero touchdowns. OBJ won a Super Bowl during his career while playing for the Los Angeles Rams, and started in seven regular-season games, racking up 305 yards and five touchdowns.
The same was true when he played under coach Harbaugh in Baltimore in 2024, when he started six games and recorded 565 yards and three touchdowns. In both instances, he also had the services of a star quarterback, with Matthew Stafford on the Rams, and Lamar Jackson on the Ravens. Unfortunately, the Giants lost their starter, Jaxson Dart, for what will likely be the entire season due to a knee injury he suffered this past Monday.
Other wide receivers began to decline with production after 30, and that could be the case with Odell Beckham Jr, as he nears retirement. The Giants also have talented receivers ahead of him, including Malik Nabers, who returned from last year's season-ending injury. Still, it would be great for Giants fans to see OBJ involved more in the offense somehow rather than him waiting around for another unfortunate injury to strike the roster.
