Marvin Harrison Jr. isn't deterred by a quiet start to his third NFL season. The Arizona Cardinals wide receiver didn't record a single catch in last Sunday's 31-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks after grabbing a 31-yard reception in Week 1. Jacoby Brissett has targeted Harrison just four times in two games, a surprisingly low rate for a former No. 4 pick touted as a future can't-miss star.
Harrison has faced considerable scrutiny from critics questioning his effort this month. Per ESPN's Josh Weinfuss, the outside reaction hasn't caught the 24-year-old off guard. "I understand who I am and what I was expected to do when I got drafted here and all the expectations that were put on me, and I think people want certain production," Harrison said.
"So, when that's not happening, everybody's going to ask questions or figure out why is that the reason? And, so, I wouldn't say I'm surprised by anything that's talked about me anyway." Harrison said "a bunch of things" have factored into his early struggles, including tough matchups against the Seahawks and Los Angeles Chargers. "It's definitely a combination of a lot of things," Harrison said.
"For my route tree getting down the field, you need a lot of things to go right. You need the right coverage, you need protection to hold up, you need me to run a great route, you need obviously Jacoby (Brissett) to make the right pass and make the right read. So, I feel like it's never one person's fault for anybody's success or lack thereof, really." The rough patch hasn't rattled Harrison, who will stay the course and look for his approach to eventually yield better outcomes.
"Does your confidence come from results or does your confidence come from your process?" Harrison said. "And I think for me it comes from my process. So, my process isn't going to change whether I get zero catches or 10 catches.
I'm going to still do the same thing week in and week out, Monday through Saturday to prepare myself for games. So, I think that's where I have a lot of my confidence comes from." Harrison will look to rebound when the Cardinals play the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday at 4:05 p.m.
