JJ McCarthy stepped in for the New York Giants after starting quarterback Jameis Winston threw his second interception of the game early in the fourth quarter. In his limited time on the field, McCarthy completed 11 of his 21 pass attempts for 243 yards, one touchdown and one interception — nearly leading the team to an improbable comeback against the visiting New Orleans Saints. The Giants acquired McCarthy in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings earlier this season, bringing him in following the season-ending injury for franchise QB Jaxson Dart.
After his New York debut, McCarthy delivered a grateful message to the Giants fanbase. "I'm just extremely honored to be a part of the New York Football Giants because this fanbase is unbelievable," McCarthy said. "The passion, how they show up every single game, home and away.
It means the world to be able to wear this blue and play for them. "All love for this city and New Jersey, I'm just extremely grateful for them." The Giants are 3-2-1 following Sunday's loss to the Saints. They'll look to get back on track in a Week 7 matchup against the Houston Texans this coming Sunday.
New York head coach John Harbaugh has yet to announce an official starting quarterback decision moving forward.
