The New York Giants looked like the darlings of this NFL season after Week 1, knocking off their rival Cowboys at home in John Harbaugh's debut as head coach. Jaxson Dart was breaking out as one of the league's best young quarterbacks, and Cam Skattebo was explosive in his first game back since his season-ending ankle injury a year ago. Then disaster struck in Week 2, with Dart going down with a severe knee injury, damaging his MCL, PCL, and meniscus, and requiring season-ending surgery.
Attention has now shifted to who will take over now that the Giants' franchise quarterback is gone for the year. Jameis Winston won't keep this team in the playoff hunt, and New York will need to act fast if it wants to find the right guy. Saturday morning, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that the Giants have "spent the week making calls" on quarterbacks around the league and could add one by Monday.
Pelissero specifically pointed to six names that have been heavily involved in trade rumors in recent months and could take over as New York's starting QB: Mac Jones, J.J. McCarthy, Spencer Rattler, Justin Fields, Joe Milton, and Jimmy Garoppolo. Rattler and McCarthy feel like the biggest gambles. Neither has shown much promise when thrust into the starting role with the teams that drafted them, the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints, and both have already been outplayed by other quarterbacks on their rosters. Fields would make sense as someone with legitimate starting experience and a dual-threat skill set similar to Dart's.
He remains one of just three quarterbacks to ever rush for 1,000 yards in a season (he ran for 1,143 yards in 2022 with the Bears). He's currently the backup in Kansas City, which, given that Patrick Mahomes is coming off a serious injury, is an important job. Jones is another quarterback with plenty of starting experience, having previously served as the Patriots' starter after they drafted him 15th overall in 2021.
He's shown flashes in recent years that he can move the offense and keep his team in the fight, but Kyle Shanahan has been a fan of Jones since his days at Alabama and may not want to move off him. Garoppolo, meanwhile, is a free agent, and Milton is signed to the Cowboys' practice squad, making them the cheapest options, as the Giants wouldn't have to give up anything to bring in either player. It will likely come down to cost.
