Three weeks away from their Week 1 matchup against the Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football,” the Kansas City Chiefs still don’t know if quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be ready to play. Head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Monday that Mahomes’ recovery seems to be going well, but he’s not ready to say whether or not the two-time MVP will, indeed, be ready to play against the Broncos. I’m literally taking it day by day.

But if the doctors and the trainers and everybody that are involved with this give him an OK — and then most of all, if he feels like he can — then we'll address that when we get there.” Mahomes has stated multiple times this offseason that he expects to play in Week 1. He’s coming off a serious ACL injury suffered in Week 15 last year.
If he does play in Kansas City’s season opener, it’ll mark a nine-month recovery, which is considered a quick recovery for an ACL injury. Some have cautioned that Mahomes will likely be rusty once he returns to the field, but Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees believes that Mahomes will be just as good as he was before his injury. "… I'm confident that the best of Patrick Mahomes is still ahead of us.” Brees' prediction is a bit bold considering Mahomes will be 31 days after the season starts, and he's coming off a major surgery.
There are also some serious questions about the Chiefs wide receiver corps, and many analysts believe Mahomes will have to don his Superman cape if the team is to make it back to the Super Bowl. At the time of his injury, Mahomes threw for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions last season. However, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has been replaced by Eric Bieniemy, who was the Chiefs’ OC when Mahomes had some of his best seasons.
