Whenever my boyfriend needs anything new in his closet, I drag him to Uniqlo. Specifically, the JW Anderson collection at Uniqlo, where I always find the perfect button-down or jacket for him. For a scientist who’s not interested in fashion but cares about looking presentable, the decently priced, quality essentials from the Uniqlo x JW Anderson collab have been a saving grace.
Jonathan Anderson, who’s currently serving as the Creative Director at Dior, has been designing a small batch of clothing for the Japanese lifewear brand under his namesake label, JW Anderson, since fall of 2017. Nearly a decade later, the two are still merging minds, creating functional clothing for the everyday consumer through an array of shirts, jeans, sweaters, and jackets. I’ve not been able to land on why it took me this long to check out the women’s collection myself.
I’ve long admired the fabrication and cut of the button-downs (which my partner has bought six of), but never really thought to try on any of the women’s pieces until now. If I’m being honest, it’s probably because I’ve just been stealing the men’s Oxford shirts from his closet. The fit feels unisex, and the supple cotton rayon fabric is much softer than the crisp cotton poplin shirts I own.
If the men’s collection is that good, then the women’s must be worth me trying. Jonathan is, after all, primarily designing for women at Dior, and if it’s one man I trust to make clothes for women, it’s him. So, I took myself to my closest Uniqlo store and picked up a few of the JW Anderson x Uniqlo pieces to try.
Here’s what made it into my workwear wardrobe (and what didn’t). The Oxford Boxy Shirt Where I’m wearing it: To work, brunch, and shopping. As someone who naturally gravitates toward long and oversized silhouettes, I was surprised at how much I loved this cut-off Oxford shirt.
Unlike the standard Oxford shirt, the hemline ends just between the hips and the waist, which feels like a very natural place for a shirt to fall on a woman—especially if you’re wearing high- or mid-rise jeans. There’s something very preppy about its boxy cut—I imagine it styles well with a pleated skirt and light jacket for fall. The Cotton Volume Sleeve Shirt Where I’m wearing it: Lounging around the house and casual Fridays at work.
