MAGA Moms Are Teaching AI to Helicopter Parent for Them

After warning about AI's risks to children, Moms for Liberty is using the technology to keep a closer watch on schools.

Parents who warned that artificial intelligence could endanger their children are now using it to keep watch over their schools. Moms for Liberty, the conservative parental-rights group whose co-founder warned of AI's potential harm to children, has deployed its own AI system to monitor school board agendas across more than 13,000 districts. The apparent reversal makes a kind of sense: a movement built around challenging educational institutions has found a way to challenge them more effectively.

The technology lets parents scrutinize proposed policies before a vote, turning the occasional school board check-in into something approaching permanent supervision. In effect, Moms for Liberty is teaching AI to do the hovering for them. The group's campaign for safeguards around classroom AI has always allowed for technology under human oversight.

Its new project simply puts that principle to work on the parents' side of the schoolhouse door. Put simply, the same technology the group fears could diminish parental authority is now being used to extend it. The group unveiled the new system, called M4L AWARE, at its national summit in Dallas.

According to Moms for Liberty, it scans school board agendas every 12 hours and flags proposals involving diversity, equity and inclusion or gender policies. Local chapters receive alerts intended to give parents time to respond before officials vote. The initiative adds a technological dimension to a movement with established ties to President Donald Trump.

He addressed Moms for Liberty's national summits in 2023 and 2024, and the organization promotes a parental-rights pledge he signed. Co-founder Tina Descovich has also participated in White House discussions about education amid Trump's second administration. For Moms for Liberty, the technology addresses a familiar problem: parents often discover proposed school policies too late to influence them.

"For five years we've asked parents to show up at school board meetings, and they have," a Moms for Liberty spokesperson told Newsweek. "M4L AWARE gives parents back the time to read the source documents, call their board members and ask questions before the vote instead of after it's done." The spokesperson offered a hypothetical example of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) contract buried deep in an agenda shortly before a vote. AWARE is designed to catch such proposals while parents can still intervene.
