Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby just turned 39, but the former No. 1 overall pick doesn’t appear to be ready to retire anytime soon. The Athletic’s Josh Yohe spoke with Crosby at the IIHF World Championships in Switzerland back in May, and he “scoffed” at the presumption that he would be retiring anytime soon. Crosby has one year left on his contract, but what does the future hold for him after that?
An extension with the Penguins seems the most likely course of action, and it’s something his agent is currently working on. The Penguins’ first preseason game is Sept. 21.” Yohe pointed out that Crosby signed a two-year contract with Pittsburgh two season ago when his contract was up, hinting that a similar deal could be on the table this time around too. Crosby’s current cap hit is $8.7 million per year thanks to him doing the Penguins a favor with a lower AAV.
But if he re-signs, expect it to be much higher. His next deal, he may do an extension next summer. He may sign a one-year deal for $12 (million).
I don’t know.” The Penguins will presumably want to keep Crosby around as long as he wishes. Despite his age, he’s still one of the more lethal scorers in the NHL. Last season, Crosby scored 29 goals and 74 points, and he’s just one year removed from back-to-back-to-back 90-point seasons.
In fact, not counting the COVID shortened 2019-2020 season and an injury shortened 2020-2021 season, Crosby has recorded 80 or more points in every season dating back to 2012 except last year.
