No Man’s Sky is still going strong more than a decade after its original release, and the game’s latest big update, Forsaken, is a seasonally appropriate horror show. Hello Games just dropped the full patch notes and a trailer for the 7.10 update, which is available today. Forsaken promises to let intrepid pilots explore the “darker side” of the game’s universe, with a focus on scavenging for bizarre curios.
Players will encounter traders who request haunted tech and biological horrors, requiring them to scavenge from “derelict hulks, abandoned freighters, dig sites on planets, or infested outposts.” Tracking these parts down will net the player biomechanical corvette modules that will make their ship look like it came right out of the Borg Collective or Yuuzhan Vong. There will also be new cockpits and a disquieting ship interior set. Beyond corvette parts, players can trade for new weapon and space suit styles, including a larva tank helmet and a “wriggling grub cannon multi-tool,” which sounds appropriately gross.
Here's how Hello Games' founder Sean Murray describes No Man's Sky's latest update: In Forsaken, players will begin searching for rare haunted tech or biological horrors. Finding these means visiting the spookiest parts of No Man’s Sky, like derelict hulks, abandoned freighters, dig sites on planets or infested outposts. These strange and haunted mementos have attracted a number of enigmatic traders from all corners of the universe, all set upon gathering the samples for their collections, and looking to trade.
Any traveller brave enough to venture into these dangerous wrecks may salvage mementos and trade them with collectors for new biomechanical corvette modules. Allowing players to make beautiful and strange corvette exteriors, and lean fully into that creepy and organic side of sleek sci-fi ships. For the scaredy-cats among us not interested in exploring haunted derelicts, the Forsaken update also brings general improvements to the game.
Players can now seamlessly warp to nearby stars by locking onto a far-off constellation, getting them there without opening the map. The game is getting new postal missions that turn players into "a delivery driver across the galaxy.” UI updates include a radial menu for weapon selection (radial menus rule) and a new minimal HUD mode, which will go particularly well with exploring the creepy corners of the galaxy. No Man’s Sky’s "impossible" iPhone and iPad port is also out today, and it includes all the game’s updates, including Forsaken. iOS players on iPhone 11 and above can try the first chunk of the game for free.
The game’s press release boasts of the “wild list of technical and usability achievements required to bring something like this in to land, from the custom-made touch controls, attention to battery life and thermodynamics, right through to the single-download 4GB file-size.” No Man’s Sky has had quite a redemption tour over the last decade, going from being bashed at release for being undercooked to becoming one of the most comprehensive space exploration games around. Forsaken is the game’s fifth major update in its 10th anniversary year, following Remnant, Xeno Arena, The Swarm, and Cosmos. Despite being a decade in, Hello Games shows no signs of slowing down.
