Packers Reveal Contingency Plan for Possible Josh Jacobs Suspension

With a possible suspension looming, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst reveals the team's backup plan for Josh Jacobs.

Green Bay Packers star Josh Jacobs enters the 2026 season as one of the best running backs in the NFL. He also faces the possibility of an NFL suspension stemming from a legal incident this past offseason. Jacobs was arrested in May on domestic violence charges, and given how the league has handled other legal matters — including Rashee Rice's six-game suspension last year and James Pearce Jr.'s recent eight-game suspension — some have wondered whether Jacobs could face similar punishment for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

But Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst says the team has a plan in place if that happens. "I'm pretty confident we can sustain it," Gutekunst said Wednesday. "That doesn't mean we wouldn't do that, but yeah, we'll deal with that when that comes.

But we've obviously been prepared for that in case that happens. At the same time, I feel really good about the guys we got in that room, and I think we can survive that and kill it." He also added 282 receiving yards, but his per-carry average ranked among the lowest of his career and the league, marking a steep drop-off from the year before, when he rushed for 1,329 yards and earned his third Pro Bowl selection.

Still, Jacobs remains the focal point of the Packers' offense, and any suspension would be a significant blow for a team contending for a Super Bowl. It would, however, open the door for third-year back MarShawn Lloyd, who has generated significant buzz throughout camp. Regardless, Gutekunst has made clear that if Jacobs is suspended, the Packers believe they're prepared to stay competitive without him.
