Researchers at the University of Bayreuth, in collaboration with Kyoto University, Japan, have investigated one possible mechanism by studying the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides.
Their new study shows that parents do more than simply provide care for their offspring: They also improve the entire developmental environment in which their young grow up, a factor that may itself have influenced evolutionary change. The findings have been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. At first glance, the care a beetle provides for its offspring may seem far removed from everyday human experience.
Yet the Bayreuth study sheds light on a fundamental principle of life: Parents facilitate the survival of their young not only through direct provisioning of food but also by transforming their living environment, in this case the highly contested resource of carrion, into a small protective zone. The research demonstrates how environments shaped by parents can influence evolutionary processes over many generations. It therefore provides new insights into the origins of parental care, dependence and social living.
More broadly, the study contributes to our understanding of why favorable developmental conditions for offspring are crucial in many animal species, including humans. Parents across a wide range of animal groups modify the environments in which their offspring develop. Such modifications are a central aspect of what is known as developmental niche construction: Parents shape the conditions under which their offspring grow and, in doing so, alter the selection pressures acting upon them.
In the burying beetle (Nicrophorus vespilloides), parents prepare the carcass on which their larvae develop by removing fur or feathers and applying antimicrobial secretions. "Although developmental niche construction is of considerable theoretical importance, it is often studied only under simplified conditions or with a focus on individual aspects of parental care. As a result, it frequently remains unclear how different parental modifications interact in ecologically relevant contexts," says Eric Grubmüller, doctoral researcher at the Evolutionary Animal Ecology research group at the University of Bayreuth and first author of the study.
To better understand these interactions, the researchers combined laboratory and field experiments. First, they compared the survival and growth of larvae raised on parent-prepared carcasses with those raised on unprepared carcasses. They also analyzed the volatile compounds emitted by the carcasses.
