Patrick Mahomes officially returned to the football field for the Kansas City Chiefs' season-opening game after suffering a brutal season-ending injury near the end of the team's previous season. Mahomes and the Chiefs certainly made a statement, as the three-time Super Bowl winner and two-time NFL Most Valuable Player led the team to a 31-10 home victory. However, much of the offense went through their offseason acquisition, Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker, who finished with 173 yards and a rushing touchdown, with another 18 receiving yards and a receiving TD.
Following the win, Mahomes reflected on his performance and how the Chiefs didn't have the passing attack they've been known for in previous seasons. As the team's leader, he put that on his shoulders as he gets back to finding his previous form. There were times where those guys were open, and I was a little bit quick with my reads and getting the ball out of my hand," Mahomes told reporters. "I have to have the trust in the offensive line. I have to have the trust in myself that I can stand taking the hits, but it's a good start as far as being out there and playing." He indicated that with "more trust in the knee" and the offensive line, he'll begin to find the open players down the field as his season moves forward.
Last season was a disappointment for the Chiefs, who were already struggling to try to make the playoffs, and then Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in a December game against the Los Angeles Chargers. He later had surgery to repair his ACL and MCL, then began the grueling rehabilitation process. In his return for "Monday Night Football," Mahomes completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns in his first game back, with 23 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.
It wasn't one of the stellar Mahomes performances of yesteryear, but it was a start, and the Chiefs certainly made a statement by defeating last season's division winners by three touchdowns.
