It's still early in the Heisman Trophy race, and even though some strong contenders are near or at the top of the odds, that doesn't mean one of them will win the award. Currently, Ole Miss Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss is the odds-on favorite to claim the award. Chambliss, a future NFL pick, led his team to a 3-0 start, including last Saturday's big win over the LSU Tigers.
Right below Chambliss in the odds is another quarterback, Miami Hurricanes star Darian Mensah. He's also led his team to a 3-0 start behind impressive early-season numbers. However, maybe a non-quarterback can claim the award.
During Saturday's presentation of "SEC Nation" from Gainesville, Florida, Paul Finebaum mentioned a surprise contender that may not be on everyone's radar: Jadan Baugh. Now, it's happened before. ... there's been a couple of miscues, but if Florida wins today, and can go on the road next week, I think he will emerge into the Heisman race," Finebaum stated.
He explained that a win over Ole Miss today could strengthen Baugh's case against Rebels QB and Heisman favorite, Chambliss. As of this report, DraftKings Sportsbook had Florida favored to win the home game by at least a field goal. "You shut [Chambliss] down, Jadan goes crazy, which he's capable of, because he is the best running back in the country ...
Then another Heisman Trophy winner for the Gators," he said. Baugh has 54 carries for 458 rushing yards, tied for second in the nation, and eight touchdowns, tied for first. He's also 10th in the nation with 8.5 yards per carry, helping the Gators' offense.
Earlier this week, Bleacher Report shared the latest Heisman Trophy odds heading into Week 4, with Chambliss leading at +300, followed by Mensah at +400. The first non-quarterbacks on that odds list are wide receivers Malachi Toney of the Miami Hurricanes and Jeremiah Smith of the Ohio State Buckeyes, both at +1200 odds to win the award. Two years ago, Colorado's two-way star Travis Hunter won the award after a standout season playing cornerback and wide receiver for the Buffaloes.
