The Las Vegas Raiders are unsure when running back Ashton Jeanty will return after he suffered what is believed to be a sprained ankle during Sunday's practice, and that uncertainty could be bad news for the No. 1 pick in the 2026 draft. Jeanty was helped off the field by trainers after he landed on turf grass. Jeanty, the No. 6 pick in the 2025 draft, is expected to play a key part in the Raiders offense this season after rushing for 975 yards and five touchdowns in his rookie season.
He was a solid contributor as a receiver option, catching 55 passes for 346 yards and five touchdowns. Per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Raiders don't want to play Mendoza in the regular season unless there is enough on offense to support the rookie quarterback. Jeanty's injury could force Las Vegas to play Kirk Cousins early in the season.

"A big part of the decision on when to play the rookie, I’ve been told, will be tied to the rest of the offense’s ability to support him. Losing running back Jeanty is a big blow in that regard." During OTAs and mandatory minicamp, it was presumed Cousins would be the starting quarterback, with the Raiders hoping the veteran could lead the team through the end of the season.
However, Las Vegas head coach Klint Kubiak has suggested Mendoza could push to start this season. Kubiak told reporters this weekend the starting quarterback position was up for grabs. "I don’t want anyone to be comfortable in their job.
It should always be that way for all positions. So, let’s keep going forward.” The Raiders have to balance what's best for the team in Week 1 versus what's best for the organization in Mendoza for the future. If Jeanty is out for a few weeks to start the season, it would make sense for Las Vegas to start Cousins.
