Seattle Mariners rookie Colt Emerson will undergo season-ending surgery on his wrist Wednesday, capping off a disappointing season for the 21-year-old. The Mariners placed Emerson on the 10-day injured list with left wrist tendon inflammation Aug.14, though the injury originated from an injury he sustained during spring training. He played through the injury—receiving an injection for the issue in April—perhaps impacting his production on the field.
Emerson had a dream start to his time in MLB, hitting a home run in his second game in the show, but struggled to maintain a passable bat throughout the season. Through 69 games in MLB this season, Emerson hit eight home runs and tallied 23 RBIs, though slashed .190/.246/.335 for a .581 OPS—well below league average. The Mariners originally planned to send Emerson down following their series against the New York Yankees, which he ended by going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts, though they opted to place him on the injured list instead.
While Emerson will miss the remainder of 2026 following his surgery, the Mariners expect him to be ready to go come spring training ahead of the 2027 season, per Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times. After discovering the severity of the injury, president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto spoke about wanting Emerson to have come forward earlier. Crawford will return from the injured list soon to take over the spot. Crawford began his rehab assignment last week, and could return before the end of the month. The infielder played 87 games prior to his injury this season, hitting 10 homers and driving in 30 runs.
His OPS sits below .700 on the season, but Crawford is a clear upgrade for an ailing Mariners infield and will help them on their chase for first place in a miserable AL West.
