One of the best tennis players in the world suddenly retired from a match just days before the start of the U.S. Open – the final major tournament of the year. Trailing 4-1 and serving at 40-40, Elena Rybakina stopped playing during the first set of her quarterfinal match against Iga Swiatek at the Cincinnati Open on Thursday night.
The No. 2-ranked Rybakina took a medical timeout to have trainers address her left ankle area. She eventually returned to the court and offered a serve, but quickly retired from the match after testing her injury.
