Titans GM Made Uncomfortable Cam Ward Omission

Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi didn't mention Cam Ward as a foundational piece of the franchise.

The Tennessee Titans list the cornerstone of their franchise, and it doesn't appear that they expect Cam Ward to pick up the mantle. Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi spoke to reporters on Thursday after finalizing a trade to send Jeffery Simmons to the Chicago Bears in exchange for first-round picks in 2027 and 2028 and a 2027 fourth-round pick. Per Terry McCormick of TitanInsider, Borgonzi named several foundation pieces the Titans have with Simmons off the team.

One name was noticeably absent: Ward. "We also have belief in these young guys that they're going to get better." Ward is certainly one of the young players that the Titans hope will show improvement, but it should be concerning for Ward that he was not named as one of the foundational pieces for Tennessee.

He was the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Through seven games this season, Ward has thrown for 1,179 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions while adding 71 yards and two scores on the ground. He's led the Titans to a 1-6 record.

The added first-round picks will give McCormick flexibility to potentially pick Ward's successor in the next two drafts. Ward was the first pick McCormick made as the general manager of the Titans. In a season and a half, the returns on the pick do not look promising.

Thursday's trade showed the Titans do not believe they are close to contending in the near future (Why else would they trade the All-Pro player months after signing him to a new deal?). They will use the resources from the trade to build a new foundation. For more on the Titans and the NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.
