President Donald Trump is set to appear in what Michael Cohen told Newsweek will be the first public conversation between the two men since the collapse of their once-close relationship, with the interview scheduled to air on New York radio station 77 WABC. Cohen said Wednesday that Trump will join a special edition of his radio program Thursday at 6 p.m. ET, with the remainder of the interview set to air on his regular Sunday show, When You Know You Know, which airs from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
"This is the first public conversation between the president and myself," Cohen told Newsweek in a brief phone interview. "Two friends for 15 years." He described the interview as an opportunity to have a discussion that "would mirror the way the conversation would have been during our 15 years of friendship." Cohen, who served as Trump's longtime personal attorney and fixer before turning against him and later serving prison time for crimes that included campaign finance violations, declined to preview the discussion or say whether the pair had repaired their relationship. In July, Cohen told CNN that he and Trump had "buried the hatchet" after years of estrangement and described their relationship as "cordial and growing.
Asked directly if he considered Trump a friend again or wanted to be his friend, Cohen told Newsweek: "Why don't you listen to the show?" Cohen and Trump's relationship unraveled in 2018 after federal investigators targeted Cohen and he later pleaded guilty to campaign finance, tax and banking crimes. During his August 2018 plea hearing, Cohen said he had arranged hush-money payments at Trump's direction, marking a dramatic break with the president he had once vowed to protect. Cohen served about 13 months in federal prison in Otisville, New York, before completing the remainder of his three-year sentence in home confinement.
