WWI Pillbox in Southwold, England

This is a century-old World War defence bunker which was ruined and condemned, and is now restored and re-purposed as a 'Living History' asset. Built by the military during World War One to guard a strategic bridge over a once-tidal creek on the East Coast of England, this historic monument was rescued and rebuilt by raising funds in the local community, to be turned into a 'Living History' centre.

As so many of the original, concentric blocks were thrown into the creek by vandals, the construction team have specially cast replica blocks to complete this small, circular building. All the walls have been re-built on new foundations, and a special viewing window has been added where the most blocks were missing. New exact replica steel doors are on order, as is the new toughened plate glass window.

Very soon visitors will be able to see what it was like 'being on duty' during war time in a defence bunker, overlooking the seaward marshes to the East and the main road to Southwold and its important Harbour. Threats of German invasion were taken very seriously in both world Wars and the beaches of the East coast of England were considered to be the most vulnerable landing places. The Pillbox will also be the centre-piece of a local History Trail taking in a 14C church, a medieval village now lost to the sea, and whats left of the significant navigation of The River Blyth to Halesworth, Suffolk, a historic, Georgian brewing and malting town.

However visitors are welcome before then, by arrangement. We are also looking for additional members of our local team, especially a Volunteer Archivist/Researcher to help us build up a comprehensive archive of Pillboxes similar to this. There are similar bunkers to be found in nearby Norfolk, but not exactly the same as this rare example.
