The New York Yankees have added a new pitcher to their depth. According to the New York Post's Jon Heyman, the Yankees have signed pitcher Eli Morgan to a minor league contract. This comes after he was designated for assignment and then released by the Kansas City Royals earlier this week.
Morgan appeared in 16 games this season with the Royals before hitting the free agent market, where he posted a 0-1 record, a 5.12 ERA, and 16 strikeouts. This was after he had a 0-1 record, a 12.27 ERA, and four strikeouts in seven games during the 2025 season with the Chicago Cubs. Morgan has spent a decent chunk of this season in Triple-A, too.
In 22 Triple-A games this campaign, the 5-foot-10 righty has posted a 4-0 record, a 1.40 ERA, and 35 strikeouts. With numbers like these, he has been very effective in the minors this season, so it makes sense that the Yankees are taking a gamble on him with this minor league contract. Morgan will also provide the Yankees with another pitcher who has a decent amount of MLB experience.
In 184 career MLB games over six seasons split between the Cleveland Guardians, Cubs, and Royals, he has posted an 18-14 record, 282 strikeouts, and a 4.25 ERA.
