As Connor Hellebuyck continues to sit out following his trade request, the Winnipeg Jets have added a new goalie to their roster. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Jets have claimed goaltender Clay Stevenson off of waivers from the Washington Capitals. With the Capitals having veteran goalies Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren, there was no room for Stevenson on their NHL roster.
Now, the Jets have taken advantage of this by claiming Stevenson off waivers. Stevenson is a very interesting goalie for the Capitals to take a chance on with this waiver claim. While the 27-year-old does not have a ton of NHL experience, he has shown promise when called upon.
In four games last season for the Capitals, he had a 3-1-0 record, a 2.00 goals-against average, and a .921 save percentage. Stevenson has also had plenty of success down in the AHL. In 37 AHL games last season with the Hershey Bears, he posted an 18-13-3 record, a 2.62 goals-against average, and a .912 save percentage.
He also had a .922 save percentage in 36 games for Hershey in 2024, so he has been a very effective AHL goalie. Given the success Stevenson has had in the AHL, it is understandable that the Jets have claimed him off waivers as Hellebuyck sits out. It will be interesting to see if Stevenson can break out for Winnipeg and prove that he is ready to be a full-time NHL goalie.
