A college football game in San Antonio was overshadowed by a tragic incident before kickoff on Saturday. A military demonstration intended to honor service members took a sad turn, leaving spectators and the university community facing heartbreaking news. Air Force service member died after falling during a pregame rappelling demonstration at the Alamodome, where the University of Texas at San Antonio hosted Navy.
The Air Force confirmed the death following the incident. According to ESPN, four military personnel were scheduled to rappel from the stadium rafters onto the field as part of UTSA's annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans game. One service member appeared to lose control during the descent and fell onto the turf.
Medical personnel immediately responded to the injured individual. The service member was transported to a local hospital, where they later died from their injuries. As per Pete Thamel: “Nellis Air Force Base Public Affairs issued a statement saying the service member, who was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, was injured at the stadium and died at a local hospital.” UTSA expressed its condolences following the incident.
In a statement quoted by ESPN, the university said, "We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the start of tonight's game. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the soldier who was affected, his family and his military colleagues." The incident occurred shortly before kickoff and delayed the game by approximately 10 minutes. The matchup eventually proceeded, with UTSA defeating Navy 38-34 in a closely contested game.
The Air Force confirmed that the incident remains under investigation. Officials have not disclosed further details about what caused the fall.
