The Arizona Cardinals released an injured running back on Monday before his third NFL season.

The Arizona Cardinals parted ways with a young running back who entered the NFL with high hopes. Arizona released Trey Benson with an injury designation on Monday. The Cardinals also activated edge rusher Josh Sweat from the physically unable to perform list and placed wide receiver Xavier Weaver on the injured reserve.

The Cardinals selected Benson with the No. 66 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after he tallied 2,267 scrimmage yards and 24 touchdowns over two seasons at Florida State. Although he took a back seat to James Conner as a rookie, Benson made his touches count by registering 291 rushing yards on 66 carries and securing all six targets for 59 receiving yards. Benson looked poised to assume a bigger role when James Connor suffered a season-ending foot injury in Week 3.

However, Benson also missed the rest of the season after injuring his knee in Arizona's next game. In four games before the injury, Benson collected 224 yards on 42 touches. The Cardinals finished with the league's second-fewest rushing yards (1,583), prompting a busy offseason to bolster the running back room.

Arizona foreshadowed the potential end of Benson's tenure by signing Tyler Allgeier to a two-year deal and drafting Jeremiyah Love with the No. 3 pick. Connor, who had reached 1,000 rushing yards with the Cardinals in 2023 and 2024, also returns for his sixth season with the NFC West squad.
