McCarthy won a College Football Playoff national championship together as a head coach-quarterback duo with the Michigan Wolverines. The following season, Harbaugh took over as head coach of the NFL's Los Angeles Chargers, and McCarthy was selected by the Minnesota Vikings with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Earlier this week, the Vikings traded McCarthy to the New York Giants — who are led by head coach John Harbaugh.
Jim Harbaugh said his brother called him about the possible trade before it went down, and the former Michigan coach gave a glowing recommendation. "John called me and asked me. I think you guys would be a [great match].' Really, I'm telling you guys the same thing I told my brother," Harbaugh said when speaking to reporters on Wednesday.
The Giants brought in McCarthy following the knee injury for starting quarterback Jaxson Dart that will likely hold him off the field for the remainder of the 2026 regular season. Veteran backup Jameis Winston is operating as the team's QB1 moving forward. New York will face off against the Arizona Cardinals in a Week 4 matchup on Sunday.
