I love a good collared shirt, so polos are my go-to in the spring and summer. But once fall and winter roll around, I’m all about sweaters. Even better: a sweater polo.
It’s the perfect mashup that combines the collar and button placket of a classic polo with the knit construction of a sweater, giving you a little more texture and warmth than your standard cotton pique. The best sweater polos offer that same versatility. You can dress things up or lean super casual depending on the day and occasion.
And not all have to be long-sleeved either. Short-sleeve versions are also great for tropical vacations or layers under a blazer for the office. Either way, they’re an easy way to switch up your usual sweater rotation from the same ol’ crews or turtlenecks.
The Men’s Health fashion crew and I have tried more than 30 over the last three years, paying close attention to fit, fabric, comfort, and versatility to find ones that deserve a spot in your closet. For the past five years, I’ve tested more than 25 sweater polos, but Uniqlo is easily one of my favorites. It checks all the boxes when it comes to excellent quality, fit, versatility and what really seals the deal—affordability.
At just $50, you’re getting a premium knit that could pass for something more expensive. It’s made from a cotton-blend yarn in a structured Milano rib knit that looks and feels more like woven cloth than a stretchy tee. This one feels dense yet comfortable on the skin.
I especially love the buttonless, open V-neck collar, which gives some breathing room and makes the whole thing feel a little relaxed. In terms of fit, it’s roomy through the chest and flexible through the arms without looking oversized. I’ve worn it with jeans and dressed it up with tailored trousers and loafers for dinner.
