Veterans receiving disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs are set to receive their September benefits at the beginning of October. VA disability compensation is a monthly, tax-free benefit paid to millions of veterans with illnesses or injuries caused or worsened by their military service. Payments are made in arrears, meaning the benefit covering one month is generally issued at the beginning of the next.
VA disability compensation rates are determined by a veteran's disability rating and, for some recipients, their number of eligible dependents. September 2026 VA disability benefits are scheduled to be paid on October 1. Disability compensation is paid in arrears, so the payment received at the start of October covers benefits owed for September.
A 2026 government-benefit calendar likewise lists October 1 as the payment date for September VA benefits. The date does not require an adjustment this month because October 1 falls on a Thursday and is not a federal holiday. When the usual payment date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, payments are generally moved to the preceding business day.
That will happen with October's benefits. Because November 1 falls on a Sunday, the October payment is expected to arrive on October 30. The remaining 2026 schedule is listed below.
The monthly VA payment schedule applies to several recurring compensation and pension benefits, including these: The amount a veteran receives depends primarily on their VA disability rating and, once the rating reaches 30 percent, whether they have qualifying dependents. Under the VA's 2026 compensation tables, a veteran with a 10 percent disability rating receives $180.42 per month, while a 20 percent rating pays $356.66. Dependents do not increase payments at those rating levels.
For veterans without dependents, monthly payments range from $552.47 at a 30 percent rating to $3,938.58 at a 100 percent disability rating. A veteran rated 100 percent with a spouse and one child, for example, receives a basic monthly rate of $4,318.99, with additional amounts possible for other qualifying dependents. VA disability compensation is available for service-connected physical and mental health conditions, including conditions that developed after military service when the VA determines they are connected to that service.
