New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson made headlines on Tuesday by calling out the team amid their rough 1-4 start. Saints quarterback Tyler Shough responded to Benson's words on Wednesday and made it clear that he wasn't worried about what she thought. The 27-year-old signal-caller said that Benson "wasn’t saying anything that wasn’t already known." "It doesn't affect our day-to-day process and we can’t let it regardless.
We win a game and you’re the greatest people ever, and you lose some games and it’s the worst thing ever. So I’ve said it before: We’re going to have a really good chance to go on a run here," Shough said. "I think it starts with controlling what we can and all of a sudden the narrative changes, or not and we continue to slip and we’ve got to find a way to control that." New Orleans started the year with a hard-fought, 31-30 road loss in overtime versus the Detroit Lions in a contest that they trailed 21-0 in the third quarter.
The Saints then upset the Baltimore Ravens on the road in Week 2 by a 24-17 score but have lost three in a row at home since the victory. Shough has shown flashes of solid play with 1,299 passing yards and nine touchdowns, as well as 16 rushing attempts for 72 yards and one score, but has also thrown five interceptions and committed five fumbles. New Orleans' offense has been in the middle of the pack through the first five weeks of the campaign, averaging 23.6 points per game (16th in the NFL).
The Saints defense is ranked 31st in the league with 30.2 points allowed per contest, however. Shough and company will battle the New York Giants on Sunday in Week 6 at MetLife Stadium, play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 25 in France in Week 7 and then take their Week 8 bye.
